Alsop joined the BSO as its 12th musiv director in September 2007 and has been credited with providinba much-needed spark for the orchestra. “Myt work so far with the Baltimore Symphon y has been the thrill ofa lifetime,” Alsop, 52, said in a “I cannot imagine leading a more exciting and progressivde orchestra.” Alsop, who becamd the first female to lead a majod orchestra, entered at a time when the BSO was facerd with a $19 million deficit. The BSO is now free of Duringher tenure, she committed $100,000 to help launchj OrchKids, an after-school program providinhg a taste of music instruction to 25 firs graders at Harriet Tubman Elementarg School in Baltimore.
Alsop also oversaw the BSO’s 2007 album on Sony/BMG’s Classif label. It was the first major labelk recording project for the orchestra ineight years. BSO board chairman Michael Bronfein said in a statemeny Alsophas “renewed the orchestra’s purpose,”
